Another accolade for Burwood Brickworks

Burwood Brickworks added another environmental benchmark to the list, earning a 6 Star Green Star Design & As Built rating.

Determined by the Green Building Council of Australia, the mall was able to achieve the rating thanks to its integrated heat and power grid which includes a 1000kW solar photovoltaic system, which sees it generate more energy than it uses . The center also includes a number of low-VOC, red-list-free materials that improve air quality, and a water system that captures and uses all water on site.

With a focus on reducing embodied carbon, Burwood Brickworks emits half the carbon of a building of similar size. This has been achieved through the review of environmental product declarations, extensive use of reclaimed and high recycled content materials, and a focus on locally sourced materials.

“Frasers Property is committed to achieving a minimum 5-star Green Star rating for the retail assets we create and we will continue to leverage the knowledge we have gained through the experience of Burwood Brickworks to achieve leading sustainable projects in retail and other asset classes, going forward,” says Mark Gleeson, Executive Managing Director of Investments, Frasers Property Australia.

Designed by NH Architecture with Russell & George, the mall achieved Living Building Challenge Petal certification in 2021. This achievement is widely recognized as an advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment.

At our own Sustainability Awards in 2020, the Commercial Architecture Award (Large) as well as the Best of the Best category. The downtown rooftop urban farm and restaurant, Acre Farm & Eatery, won the Commercial Architecture (Small) category.
