For SberBank’s new entrance building, Swiss architecture studio Evolution Design uses biophilic design and a dynamic saddle shape, letting light in on all levels of the Moscow campus

Moscow, Russia

With its hyperbolic parabolic shape, the new SberBank campus entrance building by Ecolution Design Ltd. achieves a large and functional entrance for 10,000 people.

SberBank commissioned Swiss architecture studio Evolution Design to design a representative entrance to two adjacent high-rise towers that are part of SberBank City, SberBank’s new campus in Moscow.

Evolution Design responded to the brief with a hyperbolic paraboloid shape that rises at each end, enclosing the outer space between the towers.

For its innovative form and attention to biophilic design, the SberBank Entrance Building recently received a 2022 International Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.

One of the challenges of the brief was to create a volume large enough to accommodate all the required functions – an entrance that will be used by approximately 10,000 employees who work in the two towers, a central reception, several restaurants and cafes, a conference center and a spacious amphitheater under one roof.

The other challenge was that this volume did not compromise daylight in the lower levels of the towers.

The dynamic saddle shape solves both challenges.

A huge space flooded with daylight was created to accommodate all necessary functions while minimizing solar obstruction from the offices in the towers.

The main function of the structure is that of a covered entrance and meeting place.

Circulation in the two towers and in the many cafes, restaurants and meeting spaces housed under the parabolic glass roof was a priority in the design.

The two entrances at the ends of the building are crowned with a series of champagne-colored stainless steel triangulated panels that bow outwards over the plazas, like delicate tiaras.

This warm-colored pattern links the new structure to all of the SberBank buildings on campus, all of which feature a similar cladding material.

The glazed facade and shiny steel crown create playful reflections of pedestrians entering and exiting the towers and shine in different shades depending on the daylight.

Upon entering the space, one is captivated by the flooded light and cantilevered restaurant terraces that punctuate the lobby.

Careful attention has been paid to biophilic design throughout: all areas have been designed with trees, lush green walls and hanging gardens that enliven the spaces and create the feeling of an oasis.

A striking wall of water further enhances the natural feeling and imbues an atmosphere of tranquility.
