PSVR 2: Release date, design, specs and everything we know so far

PSVR 2 was recently showcased at GDC 2022, where developers took a closer look at Sony’s upcoming VR headset. The new hardware seems to be remarkable, with the developers praising the system. In February, Sony officially launched PSVR 2, revealing the updated look along with several critical details about the device’s features and specs. We now have a lot more information on how PlayStation VR 2 works, and it looks like it will be able to compete with some of the best VR headsets out there. New vents will prevent users from overheating while using the headset, and a lens adjustment dial will ensure everyone can enjoy pristine virtual reality. While many expected the PSVR 2 to do away with the connections entirely, those who struggled with the wires of the previous system will be relieved to see that the entire headset is connected by a single tether.

We already knew the PSVR 2 would have a 4K resolution of 2000 x 2040 per eye, as well as an OLED HDR panel with 90Hz or 120Hz refresh rates before the design was shown. Those are great starting specs, but the PSVR 2 is already winning users over with eye tracking and haptic feedback. The next-gen headset follows the success of the PlayStation VR device, which is still considered one of the best PS5 accessories today. The new model will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5, with a tentative delivery date of Holiday 2022. We’ve compiled everything you need to know about PSVR 2 specs, release dates and other news here.

What is PlayStation VR 2 and how does it work?

PSVR 2 is Sony’s second foray into virtual reality, following the 2016 release of the original PlayStation VR device for the PS4 system. The new PS5-only headset features higher resolution, a new eye-tracking system, a wider field of view, and a new headset-controller tracking technique to replace the existing (and sometimes flawed) LED-PlayStation camera method. . Over the past five years, PlayStation VR has maintained strong popularity. Although it remained a niche device for most of its existence, we’ve seen regular releases and a passionate fanbase emerge around the system. However, since Sony dropped its previous headset from its lineup, supplies have dwindled, leaving many VR wannabes looking for PlayStation VR bundled stock.

PSVR 2 release date

There’s still no official PSVR 2 release date, though reports suggest the Headgear will arrive in time for the holidays in 2022. Our first indication of such a window came from an article by Bloomberg of June 2021. According to recent speculation from Apple and VR analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via Chinese site Nweon), PSVR 2 will be released in the second quarter of 2022. However, given supply restrictions and Sony’s understated attitude, it seems unlikely.

PSVR 2 Price

Official PSVR 2 price confirmation is still pending. However, it’s safe to infer that we’ll be paying more than the original PlayStation VR system’s $299.99 / £299.99 price tag. Sony doesn’t seem to be holding back on its next-gen headphones, so expect this to be a premium device. We don’t expect it to reach the heights of HTC Vive’s enthusiast kit, though. Many are predicting a PSVR 2 price of $399 / £349-£399 due to component shortages (and the resulting price increase).
