Sober October recipes and alcohol-free cocktails

October has arrived – the month of spooky season, yes – but also “Sober October”, a fashionable opportunity to give your body a rest from the booze, if you choose to participate.

Non-alcoholic options have become popular whether you’re taking a break or just want to drink less.

Hilary Sheinbaum, author of “The Dry Challenge: How to Lose the Booze for Dry January, Sober October, and Any Other Alcohol-Free Month,” published in 2020, told USA TODAY earlier this year that she drinks cocktails NA all year round.

“Even though I don’t have a dry month, it’s very helpful because you can enjoy a delicious drink without the buzz,” she said. “NA beverages also make meetings, restaurant menus, parties, and life events more inclusive for drinkers and non-drinkers alike.”

And there are plenty of non-alcoholic cocktails to whip up at home – including some from alcoholic brands that now offer NA options.

Here are seven to try during Sober October, or any other time, for that matter.

peach pumpkin

Sheinbaum recently created a perfectly seasonal NA cocktail recipe that she dubbed “Peachy Pumpkin.” She shared the recipe with USA TODAY.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons pumpkin puree
  • 1 can of peaches (you will use the slices and juice from the can)
  • 8 ounces apple cider (can be fizzy, if you like!)
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin spice or nutmeg
  • Ice

Instructions:

  1. Pour the pumpkin puree into a mixing bowl
  2. Add 7 peach slices
  3. In a separate cup, add sugar and pumpkin spice (or nutmeg)
  4. Add half the can of peach juice and apple cider to the mug (along with the sugar and pumpkin spice mixture). Stir with a spoon.
  5. Add the peach juice/apple cider mixture to the blender bowl. Stir carefully.
  6. Pour the contents into a highball glass over ice and enjoy!

Makes: 1 NA cocktail.

Freixenet Green Glory without alcohol

Dan Magro, the author of “Suck It Up: Extraordinary Cocktails for Everyday People” created a cocktail for the Freixenet brand, which came out with a non-alcoholic sparkling wine. Magro’s recipe offers refreshing flavors such as cucumber and apple, to be poured over homemade sorbet.

Composition of the cocktails:

  • NA sparkling wine or (Freixenet White sparkling alcohol free)
  • 1.5 ounces green apple and cucumber sorbet (you can mix sorbets to create this or use the recipe below)
  • Cucumber (for garnish)
  • Mint (to garnish)

Cocktail instructions:

  1. Using a melon baller, scoop three scoops of sorbet into a goblet.
  2. Carefully pour the NA sparkling wine over the sorbet, allowing the fizz to settle as needed.
  3. Garnish with fresh mint and cucumber slices.

Makes an NA cocktail.

Ingredients Green Apple Cucumber Sorbet

  • 3 cups chopped Granny Smith apples (about 4 medium-sized apples)
  • 1 cup chopped cucumber
  • 4 ounces lime juice
  • 4 ounces apple cider vinegar
  • 8 ounces of simple syrup

How to use Green Apple Cucumber Sorbet:

  1. Place green apples, cucumber, lime juice and apple cider vinegar in a blender.
  2. Mix until all skins and seeds are dissolved.
  3. Once it has reached a smooth consistency, add simple syrup and stir to incorporate completely.
  4. Pour the mixture into a wide, shallow dish (like a cake ring) and place in the freezer.
  5. Every 30 minutes take out the pan, stir the sorbet then put back in the freezer.
  6. Once the liquid has reached the consistency of sorbet (usually takes 2-3 hours), you can cover or transfer to an airtight container and store in the freezer for up to a month. You can also use an ice cream maker instead of the brew method.

Cleantini

Ivy Mix, co-founder of Speed ​​Rack and co-owner and head bartender of Brooklyn’s Leyenda, a James Beard Award-nominated bar, created a Sober October cocktail for CleanCo, a non-alcoholic spirits brand, called “Cleantini.”

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces Clean T
  • 0.5 ounce lime juice
  • 0.5 ounce pineapple juice
  • 0.5 ounce honey syrup
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Mint leaf (to garnish)
  • Optional: 2 slices of jalapeño (for spicy)

Instructions:

  1. Shake all the ingredients in a shaker.
  2. Strain and serve in a coupe glass.
  3. Garnish with a mint leaf.

Makes: 1 NA cocktail.

Lyre Aperitif

Blender brand Fever Tree shared this NA cocktail recipe with USA TODAY from its Fever-Tree Easy Blending Recipe Book.

Lyre Aperitif

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces of Lyre’s dry appetizer
  • 6.8 ounces Fever-Tree Mediterranean Tonic Water
  • 3 lemon wedges
  • Sprig of thyme, to garnish

Instructions:

  1. Pour the Lyre Dry Aperitif into a highball glass filled with ice cubes.
  2. Squeeze then add the lemon wedges.
  3. Complete with tonic water.
  4. Garnish with a sprig of thyme.

Makes: 1 NA cocktail.

Lavender fields

Mixologist Sara Emami designed the Lavender Fields cocktail to appear on the menu at Laurel Tavern in Studio City, Calif., in partnership with Fever-Tree, who shared her NA cocktail recipe with USA TODAY.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ounce lemon juice
  • 1 ounce lavender simple syrup
  • 1.5 ounce lemonade
  • 1 ounce Fever-Tree soda
  • 1 ounce sprite
  • Fever-Tree Ginger Beer

Instructions:

  1. Shake lemon juice, lavender simple syrup and lemonade and strain over ice into a wine glass.
  2. Add 1 ounce Fever-Tree Club Soda and 1 ounce Sprite.
  3. Top with Fever-Tree Ginger Beer and stir.

Makes: 1 NA cocktail.

Orchard Swizzle

This mocktail, created and shared by alcohol brand NA Ritual Zero Proof, reads like an NA fall dream.

Orchard Swizzle

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 ounces of Ritual rum alternative
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed apple juice
  • 0.5 ounce lemon juice
  • 0.5 ounce cinnamon syrup
  • 4 dashes of Angostura bitters (or non-alcoholic bitters)
  • Garnish: fresh apple, cinnamon stick

Instructions:

  1. Combine ingredients in a Collins glass and fill with crushed ice until glass is two-thirds full.
  2. Mix with a bar spoon.
  3. Top with more ice cream and add topping.

Makes: 1 NA cocktail.
