waiting for much of my childhood in Rome, I think back to the aromas of fresh lemons growing in the garden, a pasta sauce big enough to feed a village bubbling for hours, and my nonna, who is in every way sight of the stereotypical Italian Grandmother, rolling, peeling and frying all kinds of food. Because in Italy, how can you show love and affection other than through food?

Best for: The Complete Works of Italian Cuisine

La Cucina reveals authentic Italian recipes that perfectly sum up the various regional specialties. This huge book offers more than 2000 recipes divided into eight chapters: antipasti, pizzas and sauces, pasta, polenta and rice, seafood, meats and poultry, vegetables, cheeses and sweets and liqueurs. It’s also comprehensive in its coverage of the whole country – with dishes from the northernmost part all the way to the island of Sicily.

We thought the Sweet and Sour Meatballs in Tomato Sauce were delicious and simple to make and could be washed down with any of the many liqueurs listed in the book.

Naples and the Amalfi Coast

We were first drawn to this cookbook for its beautiful design, but kept reading for its in-depth knowledge of such a gastronomically rich region of Italy.

Part of the Silver Spoon cookbook series, this book covers local dishes such as pizza Margherita as well as lesser-known fennel cookies. It showcases local regional products like buffalo mozzarella, tomatoes and lemons (the three best ingredients!).

This book is a perfect gift for anyone who loves to cook and will make a nice colorful addition to any kitchen shelf or coffee table.

Sicilia: A love letter to Sicilian gastronomy


Best for: Seafood lovers

Titled “A Love Letter to Sicilian Cooking,” this cookbook does exactly what it says on the box. In 304 pages, it perfectly encapsulates Sicily’s cultural influences, regional specialties and dichotomy between simplicity and extravagance.

We recommend this cookbook to seafood lovers as it features great recipes like Sicilian Octopus and Chickpea Stew and Roasted Whole Squid. There are also a number of vegetarian recipes that use tasty ingredients such as artichokes and eggplant. Make sure you have a stocked spice cabinet because, inspired by North African cuisine, these recipes are bursting with flavor.
