A Leeds-based tequila start-up has launched its first products.

HACIEN Tequila was founded by Seb Francis and Jordan Myers, supported by Business Development Manager Ashley Mitchell.

The trio have over 30 years of combined business experience across a range of industries. Francis has spent the past eight years leading a team of over 40 employees at online learning company Titus. Myers has a background in mechanical and electrical engineering, having run the engineering company JLM M&E Ltd for ten years. Mitchell brings 15 years of hospitality experience, having previously worked as a restaurant manager for companies such as Dakota, Rudding Park and Malmaison.

After securing a £500,000 investment, including backing from Halo Top co-founder Doug Bouton, the trio made extensive trips to Mexico visiting a range of distilleries to find a partner.

The HACIEN range will initially include three variants: its signature Pineapple Blanco, Tequila Añejo Cristalino and Tequila Blanco.

The tequilas will be stocked in bars and high-end outlets from May, including The Alchemist, Chaophraya, Tabula Rasa and Selfridges.

Seb Francis said: “The last two years creating HACIEN have not been without challenges, but it has also been incredibly rewarding and something I have wanted to do for a long time. We wanted to create a range of tequila that was not only as beautiful as it was tasty, but versatile enough to change the perceptions of the mind itself.

”I know so many people in the UK who had a negative first experience with tequila, often because it was a lousy brand they drank too much at university, and never went back to. . HACIEN is made from 100% blue agave which makes it much smoother and more complex than the average bottle you would buy at the supermarket.

“We are convinced that it is a real game-changer and has the potential to appeal to many who do not generally like tequila. Our pineapple variant is particularly easy to drink and unlike anything on the market.”
